Fair Housing Month celebrates the federal Fair Housing Act which was signed into law on April 11,1968 after a long and difficult political and social struggle. The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, family status, and disability. Vermont has additional protections for age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, receipt of public assistance, and abuse, sexual assault, and stalking.

As a part of this statewide campaign, we are hosting documentary screenings and panel discussions of the movie Owned: A Tale of Two Americas, which explores the way federal housing policy contributed to housing segregation and the housing crash of 2008. We will be screening the movie in communities across Vermont including Morrisville, White River Junction, and Winsooski, as well as at the State House.

Are you an artist, a maker, or a person with a passion for fair housing? An easy way to get involved is by submitting to our Fair Housing month art exhibits!

The Fair Housing Project has partnered with the T. W. Wood Gallery and the Old North End Arts Center and invite you to submit your work that symbolizes home and inclusive communities. We are seeking artists whose visual work reflects on “what makes a community thrive” in the context of fair housing. Artists are invited to consider the important ways the Fair Housing Act continues to shape our communities as we move away from housing segregation and ensure safe, affordable, and accessible homes for everyone. You don’t need to identify as an “artist” to submit! Apply here and share to your community: https://tinyurl.com/fairhousingmonth2020

If you would like to get involved, or are hosting a fair housing event that is not listed here, please reach out! We want to encourage and promote fair housing events throughout the state. And stay tuned for our full schedule of events.
