Don’t Miss the Second Annual Karibu on Saturday, April 28 at Main Street Landing Film House, Burlington, Vermont

NOTE: This event will be especially apropos as a celebration for the end of April, Fair Month. The real cultural benefits of embracing international  immigration in our Nation will be on display in shining glory – and it will be FUN!

Karibu is Swahili for Welcome!
The evening opens to the beat of Africa Jamono’s drumming.

This year’s show will be inter-generational, featuring families—grandmothers, sons and grand-daughters alike will walk in-sync, presenting the breathtaking evolution of fashion in their cultures. The event features a pre-show—with a red carpet, traditional foods from New American kitchens, cash bar, music, and a raffle of a Vermont Teddy Bear dressed in Kenyan garb.

This is a benefit event for Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity’s (CVOEO)   programs for New Americans, serving more than 2,200 from this community last year. It’s also a great opportunity to learn more about and come together with our new neighbors in celebration of their cultures. [CVOEO is the “mother ship” agency for the Fair Housing Project]

Many of the sponsors for this show are companies that employ or work with New Americans. It is a powerful community event!

Jan Demers, Executive Director of CVOEO, says, “It is captivating to think about getting to know your neighbors. The blogs and security companies will quickly admit that locks and dogs are a help to keep you secure. They will also say that getting to know your neighbors is a strategy that will bring more benefits than just a safe community.”
